Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Year 5 Owls

Welcome to Owls

Class Teacher: Miss Winfield
Learning Support: Miss Purnell

I’m sure that you all had a superb festive break and are looking forward to keeping those brains ‘warm’ this half term (even if our bodies might not be in this weather).

Please remember that expectations are higher again this year and I know the children will more than meet them doing it… ‘’Better than you have to…’’

In English, we are working towards writing a narrative to entertain our audiences, writing about hopes and dreams. We will achieve this by working on our use of inverted commas to be able to Identify and write double dialogue; recapping our knowledge of question use to create question tags; and introduce and write sentences with ellipsis to show incompletion.

We will have a dedicated Reading session each week where we follow the pattern of I read, we read you read, which helps with fluency by re reading the same passages and words. We work to analyse the text and the key information which then leads into comprehension questions surrounding the text to increase our understanding. Children will not be having a reading diary in Year 5 but it is still expected that children are reading independently at home or with an adult.

Our Mathematics learning will move to look at fractions. We will explore some previous and new vocabulary to enhance our learning of how fractions can be equivalent, converting and comparing fractions, as well as adding and subtracting fractions. We will regularly recall our previous learning on our ‘Flashback Fridays’ and short daily recaps.

Times Table practise is still just as important, and we will still continually do lots of work with this in school but additional practise at home is expected. All children have access to TTRockstars to help with this.

In our Wider Curriculum we will look at: Biomes in Geography, Structures in Design and Technology, Trafficking of Enslaved Africans in History, Textiles in Art.

Spellings will be handed out on a Friday and tested the following Friday. They include a range of spellings across the Primary Curriculum. Please encourage your child to practise these at home.

Additional Maths and English Homework will also be handed out on a Friday. This is to reinforce classroom learning and provide additional practice for mastering the material.

PE will take place on Wednesdays (Gymnastics) and Fridays. Please make sure children come to school in the correct kit on these days – Back bottoms, a white top and their school jumper/cardi.
